Every BCBA candidate has heard the terms behaviorism, experimental analysis of behavior (EAB), and applied behavior analysis (ABA). Most have spent hundreds or thousands of hours inside actual behavior-analytic practice. And yet when those four things have to be told apart, performance falls apart with them.
We can see it directly in our own question data. One item asking candidates to distinguish ABA from EAB has been answered 718 times. Only 43% are correct, and candidates spend an average of 201 seconds on it — more than three minutes deciding between two options that both sound behavior analytic. A second item, asking candidates to separate applied behavior analysis from professional practice guided by behavior-analytic science, does worse: 30% correct across 703 responses.
This does not appear to be only a vocabulary problem. The procedures themselves are generally familiar; the harder task is identifying what kind of behavior-analytic activity is being described:
What kind of behavior-analytic activity is actually occurring?
Task A.4 of the BCBA Test Content Outline requires exactly this distinction — among behaviorism, the experimental analysis of behavior, applied behavior analysis, and professional practice guided by the science of behavior analysis (BACB, 2022). For many candidates, the problem isn't that the terms are unfamiliar. It's that they're using the wrong feature to classify the activity.
The easiest way to miss these questions is to classify the activity by a surface feature instead of its purpose:
“It happened in a laboratory, so it must be EAB.”
“A behavior analyst helped someone, so it must be ABA.”
“They collected data, so it must be research.”
“They used reinforcement, so it must be behaviorism.”
“They used a single-case design, so it must be ABA.”
None of these hold up. EAB, ABA, and professional practice can overlap in settings, procedures, and data-collection methods, while behaviorism provides the philosophical framework underlying the science. The question that usually settles the classification is what the activity is for.
These four are related, not four sealed-off branches. A practitioner draws on findings from both EAB and ABA. A researcher's assumptions come from behaviorism. The same principles show up everywhere. What changes is the primary function of the activity being described.
Behaviorism is not "using reinforcement." It is not synonymous with collecting observable data. It's the philosophical and conceptual framework underneath the science — the BACB places assumptions like selectionism, determinism, empiricism, parsimony, and pragmatism here (BACB, 2022). A question involving behaviorism is asking about what counts as an acceptable scientific explanation, how private events are treated, or what assumptions justify systematic study — not whether someone used a token economy.
The experimental analysis of behavior is behavior analysis's basic-research tradition — the systematic investigation of behavioral processes through controlled study of behavior-environment relations (Skinner, 1966). It asks how schedules affect responding, how delay influences choice, what happens during extinction. The key feature is the purpose: EAB primarily seeks to understand a fundamental process. It does not need to solve a socially significant problem to matter. And critically, it isn't defined by location — a basic process can be studied outside a lab, and an applied researcher can build a tightly controlled arrangement around a socially important behavior. Ask what's being investigated and why, not where it happened.
Baer, Wolf, and Risley's foundational 1968 paper identified seven defining dimensions of applied behavior analysis: applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective, and generality. The word doing the most work is applied — ABA investigates behavior selected because of its importance to people and society, and it is itself a scientific enterprise, not just a delivery mechanism for EAB's discoveries. An applied researcher asks whether manipulating a variable reliably produces meaningful change, and whether that effect generalizes or maintains. The goal isn't only to help someone in the moment — it's to produce scientific knowledge about socially significant behavior.
Now picture a behavior analyst using every one of those same tools — measurement, feedback, reinforcement, graphed data, ongoing adjustment — with no research question attached, purely to help a specific client, athlete, or organization. Johnston (1996) discussed exactly this overlap: applied research and professional service delivery can look nearly identical because both involve systematic measurement and data-based decisions. What separates them is purpose. Research seeks scientific knowledge. Practice primarily seeks effective service for the consumer receiving it.
Before reading the breakdown, work this one the way you would on exam day.
Researchers arrange different delays to reinforcement and repeatedly measure choice responding in adult participants. Their goal is to determine how increasing reinforcement delay affects preference between alternatives. The investigation is intended to clarify a basic behavior-environment relation rather than solve a particular clinical problem. Which domain BEST describes the activity?
The critical clue is the purpose of the investigation, not who's involved or what's being manipulated. Human participants don't make it professional practice. Manipulating reinforcement doesn't automatically make it ABA. And while behaviorism supplies the philosophical assumptions underneath the research, the activity itself is an experimental investigation of a fundamental behavioral process — in this scenario, that basic behavior-analytic research question points to EAB.
A behavior analyst is hired by a manufacturing company to reduce employee injuries. The analyst measures safety behaviors, provides performance feedback, arranges reinforcement for safe work practices, and continuously modifies the program based on employee data. The company's goal is to reduce injuries in its workforce; no research question is being investigated and the project is not designed to produce scientific knowledge beyond improving the company's safety program. Which domain BEST describes the activity?
Socially significant behavior, data-based decisions, and reinforcement — every one of those facts is unmistakably behavior analytic. None of them automatically makes the activity applied research. The stem tells you directly that the purpose is improving outcomes for one organization and that no research question is being investigated. That makes it professional practice — the same distinction missed by about 70% of candidates on a comparable question in our bank.

When an A.4 question gives you a complicated scenario, temporarily ignore the decorative details and ask what the activity is trying to produce.
Then go back to the scenario and confirm the details actually support that classification — don't let a lab, a BCBA, or a data sheet make the decision for you before you've asked what the activity was for.

Do not classify these questions by what the activity looks like. Classify them by what the activity is for.
